As somebody who once aspired to minor in creative writing, I picked up and read Middlesex as soon as I received my Princeton acceptance letter. While the thought of camping overnight outside the creative writing building to secure a spot in his introductory fiction class soon lost its allure, I have it on good authority that the author of The Virgin Suicides (also a 1999 movie) and The Marriage Plot is a great (if quirky) professor. Princeton’s creative writing department is full of other famous names beyond Eugenides, with a faculty list that includes Joyce Carol Oates, Paul Muldoon and (from fall 2015 onwards) Jhumpa Lahiri.
